K-12 District Partnerships

To increase the number of certified teachers in Urban School classrooms, preparations take place through one-year internships, instead of the traditional, student teaching assignments. Research has indicated that a year-long internship is an effective means of inducting individuals into the teaching profession.

Spring Independent School District

Westfield Highschool

Westfield High School in the Spring Independent School District has a diverse student population that is reflected in the following percentages:  34% White; 33% African American; 22% Hispanic; and 11% Asian.  Westfield has been classified as a high need school because it has a student population of more than 50% who qualify for the reduced lunch program.

The Teacher Induction Program has been implemented at Westfield High School.  There are 10 novice teachers and 2 mentor teachers in the program.  The program at Westfield has been funded for the past two years by the Regent’s Initiative.   The Teacher Internship Project has been implemented in the Westfield High School.  We provided a training program and professional development for the mentor teachers in the Internship Project, beginning, August 2001 – it will continue as a component of our partnership with Westfield High School.

Houston Independent School District

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the largest public school system in Texas and the seventh largest in the United States.  It has 295 schools and serves an enrollment of more than 208,000 students. Student ethnicity (October 2000) is as follows: Hispanic, 54.9%; African-American 32.1%; White, 10.0%; Asian/Pacific Islander, 2.9% and native American/Alaskan 0.1%. Approximately two-thirds of HISD students meet federal criteria for free and reduced-price lunches, and about one quarter are not fluent in English. HISD has approximately 12,630 teachers.

Wesley Elementary School

A partnership that involves multiple projects and activities has been developed with the Wesley Elementary School, in the Houston Independent School District.  Wesley Elementary School is in the “Acres Homes” area of Houston.  Currently, 2 mentor teachers and 10 novice teachers are in the Teacher Induction Program at Wesley.  Wesley teachers are taking advantage of the professional development projects and graduate courses for urban teachers.  Three teachers from Wesley enrolled in graduate courses at TAMU, in January 2002.

Booker T. Washington High School

The Houston Area Initiative (HAI) has been implemented at the Booker T. Washington High School, in Houston Independent School District. One coordinator and 10 students (seniors) participate in the program. The students will attend a Houston Community College and then transfer to TAMU when course have been completed.

Sharpstown High School

The Houston Area Initiative (HAI) has been implemented at the Sharpstown High School, in Houston Independent School District. HAI has 1 coordinator and 10 students (seniors) that participate in the program.

Aldine Independent School District

Aldine Independent School District – has 60 schools, more than 50,000 students and is one of the 12 largest school districts in Texas.

Dwight D. Eisenhower High School

The Houston Area Initiative (HAI) has been implemented at the Dwight D. Eisenhower High School in the Aldine Independent School District.  One coordinator and 10 students (seniors) participate in the program. A graduate assistant runs the day-to-day operations of the program, involving 3 high schools, from the Eisenhower site.

Eckert Elementary School

The Teacher Induction Program has been has been implemented at the Eckert Intermediate School, in the Aldine Independent School District.  Three teachers participated in the graduate class for the Induction Program during the Spring 2002 Semester.  In addition, Eckert school is the designated site for TAMU graduate courses that are taught in the city of Houston.

Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District

Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) has more than 60,000 students and is the second largest district in Harris County, Texas.  It has a number of schools that have been classified as high need, based on the percentage of children that qualify for free and reduced lunch.  Frazier School is a partner school that has approximately 65% of students classified as free and reduced lunch recipients.

Frazier Elementary School

The Teacher Induction Program has been implemented at Frazier Elementary School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.  In addition, Frazier is a partner school that is slated for future programs with TAMU.
